How periodontal treatment in Laguna Niguel can improve your quality of life

Periodontal treatment Laguna Niguel

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an unfortunately common problem, especially among mature adults. It is considered a chronic inflammatory condition, induced by a bacterial infection. It invades the gingival tissue, causing it to separate from the tooth root surface, creating pockets. If the disease progresses these pockets deepen and the bone tissue is eventually effected. The erosion of bone around the teeth causes them to become loose and, without treatment, eventually fall out.

How it impacts your life

Gum disease has long been known to cause bone deterioration and the loss of natural teeth. With modern scientific research, oral infections have been linked to a vast array of systemic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and coronary disease. A recent study, which was published in the Journal of Periodontology (the medical journal of the American Academy of Periodontology), revealed yet another reason that prevention or treatment of gum disease is important – your quality of life.

Researchers, using bone loss as a measurement of periodontal disease, discovered that afflicted individuals experienced a deterioration of oral-health related quality of life issues including, social disability, psychological discomfort, and functional limitations. Many people with this condition reported diminished ability to taste the food, reduced chewing efficiency, and difficulty pronouncing specific sounds. Additionally, those afflicted with periodontal disease experienced enhanced feelings of irritation, embarrassment, tension, and insecurity, and they often find relaxation and participation in normal daily activities difficult.

Treatment

Gum disease is a complex condition and therefore there is no simple solution. To bring it under control, the plaque, tartar, and bacteria below the gum line need to be removed. This is accomplished with non-surgical deep cleaning procedures known as debridement and root planing. However, like many infections, healing takes time and bacteria cannot be eliminated in a single treatment. Therefore, your participation with diligent at-home care is essential for the success of treatment. Dr. Cruz and his team will work with you, helping you become an advocate for your own oral health.
