From the Desk of Dr. Cruz: Teeth Whitening
Q: Do you offer Teeth whitening services?
A: Yes, we do offer quality teeth whitening services. The procedure includes taking impressions of the teeth and making trays in which the whitening material is placed. The patient is then advised to sleep wearing the trays overnight. After several nights, the patient will be able to see a dramatic change in the color of their teeth. This is considered a conventional and effective approach towards teeth whitening. Laser / light bleaching, a one step procedure which takes approximately two to three hours is also a successful teeth whitening procedure that we offer.
Q: What type of whitener do you prefer to use and why?
A: We use a whitener containing Carbamide Peroxide, with a concentration of 10% or less, as approved by the FDA. A whitener with a higher percentage of concentration does not necessarily increase the advantages but increases the disadvantages of sensitivity. However, it does not cause permanent damage.
Q: Typically how much whiter can your natural teeth get after a whitening procedure?
A: How white your teeth will look after a whitening procedure depends on how white or discolored they were prior to the treatment. If the reasons for the discoloration are fluorosis or tetracycline, improvement will be more gradual.
Q: What are the advantages of whitening? Any disadvantages?
A: It is the least expensive and easiest, most convenient method to improve your smile without causing your teeth any destruction or loss of structure. The disadvantage for a young patient would be considerable sensitivity, but that would return to normal in time.
The patient should have a thorough understanding of the pros and cons of the procedure, and a proper diagnosis of the individual’s case is required for any treatment.
